Ancient West Lake towers damaged in crash by boat driver using cell phone
AN ANCIENT set of towers in West Lake, a popular tourist destination in Hangzhou, was damaged when a tour boat driver crashed into it while using his cell phone Monday evening, Qianjiang Evening News reported.
No one was injured when the boat driver, surnamed Meng, ran into the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, known as santanyinyue in Chinese, a top tourist attraction at the lake. Meng later said he had been using a cell phone to check the news while steering the boat at around 9:25pm on Monday.
The boat hit two steel guard rails outside the stone towers, causing the southern tower to fall into the 4-meter-deep lake. The tower knocked off in the accident was salvaged yesterday morning.
Passengers escaped without injury, officials said.
The 2-meter-high bottle-shaped towers were built during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), and reflect the moon's image on the lake’s surface when people light candles inside a tower hole during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Meng may face charges of damaging cultural relics, legal experts said.
The newspaper reported that some commenters said the West Lake Pleasure Boat Company burdened boat drivers by adding evening tours in the summer. “Driving a yacht is hard and stressful. One may want to play with the phone to relax,” another driver said.
