Ang Lee to make 'Life of Pi' a 3D thriller

2010-09-10TAIWAN'S Oscar-winning director Ang Lee will begin shooting his first 3D film "Life of Pi," an adaptation of the best-selling adventure novel, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.

Lee kept a low key about directing the film after he was chosen by 20th Century Fox, which received several letters of self-recommendation from other renowned directors.

The film adaptation of Canadian writer Yann Martel's Booker Prize-winning novel tells the allegorical story of a shipwrecked teenager Pi Patel stuck on a raft with an orangutan, a zebra, a hyena and a Bengal tiger as his only company.

The film crew is expected to scout for locations in Lee's native Taiwan and in Pondicherry of India, the report said.
A budget of more than US$70 million has been planned for the film which will be Lee's first trial of 3D technology to bring the world-famous book to the big screen.
