Anger mounts over 'hit-and-run' incident

ANGER is mounting over a driver who said he doesn't fear prosecution after allegedly killing a girl and injuring another in a hit-and-run incident because his father is a high-ranking police officer.

Police in Baoding, Hebei Province, detained the 22-year-old suspect Li Qiming and pledged to punish him amid a rush of online criticism triggered by Li's words.

The accident happened when Li drove a car at an estimated speed of 40 kilometers per hour on the campus of Hebei University, where the speed limit is 5kph, on Saturday night.

He is said to have hit two girls surnamed Chen and Zhang.

Li left the scene and kept driving until crowds of students and security guards blocked the road. After stepping out of the car, Li repeatedly shouted "Sue me if you dare" and "Li Gang," his father's name.

Li told students who tried to stop him from leaving that he was the son a local police chief, the China News Service said yesterday.

Police later arrived to take Li to a local security bureau. The victim Chen died after emergency treatment failed - the other victim, Zhang, is now in stable condition.

Enraged by Li's reaction, many netizens launched a search to find out the identity of Li and his father.

The investigation showed Li's father Li Gang to be the deputy director of the police bureau in Baoding District.

The discovery stirred up even more anger, with many urging local police to handle the case fairly.
