Anger over diplomat 'attack'
CHINA yesterday called on the United States to ensure the inviolability of China's diplomatic and consular staff and premises.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu made the remarks after China's deputy consul-general to Houston and his family were said to have been assaulted by police on their way to China's consulate-general.
The incident is under investigation, Jiang said, adding that China's Foreign Ministry, its embassy in the US and its Consulate-General in Houston had lodged solemn representations to the US.
"We noted the spokesperson of the US Department of State saying the US side takes this issue seriously and is investigating it. Protecting the safety of all foreign diplomatic and consular staff in the United States is essential," Jiang said. China was urging the US to ascertain the responsibility of the parties concerned as soon as possible, she added.
