Anhui man arrested for stealing caskets and urns from cemetery
POLICE in Anhui have arrested a man suspected of plundering graves to take the bodies of deceased women home with him, an Anhui news website reported.
Last fall, the manager of a Huainan City cemetery discovered 26 graves, all belonging to women, had been plundered. Caskets and urns were missing from all the sites, the report said. Cemetery management doubled the night guards on duty, believing the suspect would return to open more graves. Guards caught the man when he returned to the cemetery.
The suspect, surnamed Ma, lost his wife three years ago, and has felt very lonely ever since her death, according to the report. It is believed Ma went to the cemetery during last year's Tomb Sweeping day to pay respects to his wife. During his visit, a few graves belonging to women caught Ma's attention, and on a whim, he decided to break into these graves and take the caskets home so he would not have to live alone, the report said.
Police believe the suspect snuck into the cemetery at night and used a screwdriver and a hammer to break into each grave before taking the casket home, the report said. After he got away with it several times, police believe Ma became more daring and continued to rob graves until he was finally arrested, according to the website.
Cemetery management have since recovered the stolen urns and caskets. They have been restored them to the proper graves, the report said.
