Anhui official sacked after fatal hit-and-run

AN official in eastern China has been detained and sacked from his duty over a fatal hit and run accident.

Ying Yunfeng, land and resources director of Jieshou City in Anhui Province, was considered fully responsible for vehicular manslaughter, Xinhua news agency yesterday quoted local police as saying.

A 57-year-old janitor named Xing was killed and four others were hurt but didn't suffer life-threatening injuries.

Ying's car struck Xing at about 8:40pm on Friday. He then tried to flee the scene but collided with a woman riding a moped and his vehicle stopped after smashing a police car. He fled on foot but surrendered to police 12 hours later.

Cao Hui, chief of the traffic police in Jieshou, told Xinhua they found the car belonged to a local chemical plant, which had lent it to Ying.

A task force was set up immediately but Ying was unreachable until the next morning.

Since Ying had been at large for more than 12 hours, an alcohol test for drunk driving was invalid.

Ying confessed he had had dinner with friends on Friday night and drank a little. He gave up the car after smashing the police car and later hid in a local clinic for medical treatment as he fell down several times and had suffered cuts and abrasions to his face while fleeing.

Ying said he regretted how he dealt with situation and felt sorry for the victim, according to police.

Ying was detained on Saturday and was sacked from his position on Sunday afternoon.

Xing's family is seeking compensation.
