Animal welfare campaigners oppose Beijing rodeo show

RODEO China, the US cowboy show set to make its debut at Beijing's Olympic Stadium in October, has been overwhelmed by protest from animal rights protection and welfare organizations in China, The Beijing News reported today.

Representatives of 68 Chinese animal protection organizations have contacted the Beijing show's US organizers to call for the cancellation of the performance involving animals.

Animal welfare campaigners said that the highly competitive performances are likely to cause injuries, including broken ribs and necks for horses, and even death for participating animals.

It has been banned in many countries around the world for humanitarian concerns.

The show's Chinese organizer responded yesterday by saying they would possibly call off the performance once any evidence of animal abuse is found, the newspaper said.

As part of the 2011 Sino-US exchange programs, Rodeo China is set to be staged in the Bird's Nest National Stadium in Beijing from October 3 to 10.
The show, the largest in the stadium since the 2008 Olympics, will be a feat of logistics with a reported 120 cowboys, 180 horses, 36 bulls and 90 steers all being shipped to China from overseas.

Organizers also announced to offer US$8 million in prize money, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
