Animated movie tells story of Deng Xiaoping鈥檚 US trip

A PART-animated movie documenting late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping’s visit to the United States in 1979 had its premiere in Beijing on Tuesday.
“Mr Deng Goes to Washington” reveals many fascinating facts about Deng’s nine-day trip, including two assassination attempts, and is the first time Deng has appeared on screen in animated form.
His visit to the US, from January 29 to February 5, was the first by a Chinese leader since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, and came just a month after the two countries established diplomatic relations.
As well as documentary footage, producer Lu Muzi said the film includes 12 animated sequences, drawn in the French, American and Japanese styles, as well as traditional Chinese shadow puppetry style.
One sequence shows how on his first day in America Deng was invited by US national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski to have dinner at his home in Virginia. Brzezinski’s wife and three children were present at the meal.
Many of the animated images were drawn by 24-year-old Zhu Yuchen, a graduate of the Beijing Film Academy, The Beijing News reported.
The artist was quoted as saying that he hoped his cartoons will help attract more younger viewers.
Lu said that all of the animations were approved by Deng Lin, the late leader’s eldest daughter.
More than 90 percent of the documentary footage was purchased from the US, Lu said, adding that it was the first time it had been seen by Deng’s family.
Deng is acknowledged as the architect of China’s opening up and reform policies. He died in 1997 at the age of 93.
“Mr Deng Goes to Washington” will open across the country tomorrow.
