Another blast rocks factory
A SECOND explosion occurred at a pesticide factory in Shandong Province yesterday morning as a fire continued to burn in the factory after an explosion on Wednesday injured seven people.
Causing a large fireball and thick smoke, the second blast at Shandong Yanggu Zhongshi Pharmaceutical Co Ltd Factory in Yanggu County occurred at 9:30am.
Firefighters were unable to extinguish the blaze caused by Wednesday's explosion and were waiting for it to burn itself out when the second explosion occurred. The flammable chemical aniline fueled the second explosion, a company spokesman said.
Toxic smoke from the blaze prompted authorities to evacuate 8,000 residents in nearby villages.
The first blaze caused no pollution, an environment official said. The amount of toxic materials, including benzene, xylene, amine and hydrogen sulfide, in the air did not exceed allowable standards, the official said.
