Another criminal gang on trial in Chongqing
FIFTEEN people stood for trial yesterday in Chongqing, western China, on charges of organized crimes, vandalism, drug dealing, gambling and illegal gun procession.
The Chongqing No.5 Intermediate People's Court heard the case.
The prosecutors said Tan Libin, the gang leader, had committed at least nine criminal offences in the past 11 years, including burning the houses of two villagers as revenge because one of his men was beaten in a street fight with locals.
Tan and his gang also monopolized the local bullfrog market in 2006 and charged the dealers protection rackets, said prosecutors.
Tan's business then expanded to drug trade a year after, Chongqing Evening News cited the prosecutors.
He paid 1 million yuan (US$148,000) for 17 kilograms for heroin from Yunnan Province. But the drug was intercepted by police.
Tan also blackmailed a drug lord nearly 700,000 yuan in June 2007 and bribed a law enforcement officer 1 million yuan in exchange of a lenient punishment against another drug lord.
Prosecutors also found Tan's business partner, Tang Chuan, was an investor of Xie Caiping's casino in Chongqing.
Xie is the sister-in-law of Wen Qiang, former Chongqing's police chief and "godfather" of Chinese mafia in the city. Wen was executed early July while Xie was sentenced to 18 years behind bars last year.
