Another detainee dies in custody

A DETAINEE has died in an east China detention house with blood filling his nose and mouth, the latest in a nationwide string of deaths in custody.

But officials with the Wuyi County Detention House in Zhejiang Province have ruled out bullying from other inmates or police torture in the death, saying it was probably due to heart failure, today's Modern Express newspaper reported.

Procuratorate authorities of Wuyi and Jinhua City, which governs Wuyi, have started investigation, the report said.

He Shebiao, 32, a Wuyi native farmer, was put into detention last December for stealing 3,000 yuan (US$439) worth of grain, his mother told the newspaper.

Officials found he had breathing difficulties on February 17 and sent him to hospital where he later died, according to Wu Cuijie, Wuyi police's vice political commissar.

But He's family challenged the explanation, saying they had found blood on He's pillow in hospital as well as in his nose and mouth.

The police had suggested an autopsy, but the family had not agreed to this, Wu added.
