Another quality scare for J&J

THE baby lotion Johnson & Johnson is recalling is not available in Chinese stores, but is being sold on some e-commerce platforms. The company is now trying to work out a refunding solution for Chinese consumers who have possibly bought the products.

The company said last Friday it is recalling more than 2,000 tubes of its Aveeno Baby Calming Comfort Lotion after United States regulators found excessive levels of bacteria in a product sample, Reuters said.

J&J said the product, one of many consumer brands it has recalled in the past two years due to quality-control lapses, was being voluntarily withdrawn in Kansas and eight southern states out of "an abundance of caution" and that its potential for harm was "remote."

J&J said the product in question has never entered the Chinese market through official channels. If consumers have more questions, they can call the company's service hotline in the US, 1-877-298-2525. The service time is Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm Eastern Time.

Yesterday Shanghai Daily found that Aveeno lotion was available on taobao.com, China's major online e-commerce platform, but according to records not many tubes were sold in the past 30 days. Some vendors said they were not aware that the product is being recalled.

J&J baby products have been hit by quality problems more than once recently.

In November, the company's baby shampoo on sale in China and other countries was found to contain cancer-causing chemicals. J&J, however, insisted its products were safe.
