Another senior railway official detained for corruption

THE general manager of the China Railway Electrification Bureau (Group) Co Ltd has been detained on charges of graft, it is reported today.
Liu Zhiyuan was led away by disciplinary officials last month, becoming the 10th senior railway official to fall from grace after former railway minister Liu Zhijun was arrested for corruption in February 2011.
The two Liu are not relatives.
Reports said Liu was very close to Zhang Shuguang, former deputy chief engineer and transportation bureau chief of the Railway Ministry, who has been sacked for taking bribes.
Liu was also close to Ding Yuxin, alias Ding Shumiao, the woman boss of a railway equipment company that made enormous money illegally with the help of Liu Zhijun, the former minister.
"Liu Zhiyuan kept a low profile in the company and seemed not interested in money," said an insider close to the general manager. "He was respected in the company and under his management, business developed very well in recent years,"
The Electrification Bureau Group is affiliated with China Railway Group Ltd and has obtained contracts for about 80 percent of China's high-speed railway projects.
