Anti-doping teams turn attention to coaches
MORE focus will be placed on sports coaches in future drugs investigations, as Chinese anti-doping staff update their working methods.
Wang Xinzhai, an official from the China Anti-Doping Agency (ChinaDA), said yesterday that a database with details of several thousand coaches is being set up.
This is at a preliminary stage as ChinaDA made several changes to comply with the new World Anti-Doping Code being introduced next year, said Wang.
“The new code requires more effort in investigations, so we need to make adjustments,” said Wang, head of the newly established legal matter and investigation office of ChinaDA.
“Research indicates that coaches have the most influence in athletes’ decision making in terms of doping control. That’s why we’ll start with this group.”
Officials must sort out details of several thousand provincial and national team coaches from 15 sports, including athletics, swimming, cycling, taekwondo, rowing and weightlifting.
“We need to know coaches’ histories, their athletes and whether they have ever been involved in doping cases,” Wang said.
“We must ask provincial sport bureaus for help,” he added.
But Wang admitted that ensuring information is correct remains a headache.
“We need to study how to keep the database accurate,” he said.
The agency also plans to beef up its investigations force.
Wang said colleagues will attend training sessions of the Central Discipline and Inspection Commission of the Communist Party of China — China’s discipline watchdog — and hoped to recruit former police officers.
