Anti-execution judge quits

TAIWAN'S justice chief Wang Ching-feng has resigned just days after she stated her opposition to the death penalty which aroused heated public debate on the island.

Wang said previously that she would rather quit than order any executions.

Wang's remarks met strong backlash among the public, especially among police officers and families of people killed in violent crimes.

In response, the Taiwan authority issued a statement on Thursday, saying though the abolition of the death penalty was a possibility in the future, more reasonable discussions were needed as no consensus now existed.

"Any stay of execution of criminals already on the death row should have a legal basis," the statement reads, noting that otherwise the justice authority should handle the cases according to law.

Wang had long supported abolishing the death penalty.

In a latest poll taken by Taiwan-based United Daily News, 74 percent of the respondents opposed the abolition of the death penalty and only 12 percent were in favor of it.
