Apartment blaze killed baby and teenagers
Eight teenagers and a baby were among 19 people who died of carbon monoxide poisoning after fire broke out in an apartment last Saturday evening in Beijing’s southern suburbs, authorities said.
The incident took place in a three-story flat in Xinjian Village, Daxing District.
Six of the eight people who were injured had been discharged from hospital, said Beijing’s publicity department.
It said the fire started in a basement for cold storage, where refrigeration equipment was undergoing testing.
Eight of the deceased were younger than 18. The youngest was just a year old. The oldest victim was a 60-year-old man.
Most of them were from the provinces of Shandong, Henan and Hebei, home to many Chinese migrant workers.
Beijing police have detained 18 people, including seven who managed the apartment block, seven electricity workers, and four construction workers at the refrigeration facility.
None of the 11 workers have relevant qualifications, police said.
