Apology demanded over noodle claims

A dean of the China Agricultural University said yesterday the college will demand an apology from Ajisen Ramen, a popular Japanese-style fast-food noodle chain, for misusing its nutrition evaluation report to advertise its products.

Luo Yunbo, dean of the university's Institute of Food Science and Nutrition Engineering, said the research was conducted at the request of the China Cuisine Association, and it believed there was a scientific purpose, according to China Nation Radio

Luo said: "I do not know about Ajisen Ramen. I feel very angry."

The college issued an assessment report in 2006, which said a bowl of the company's noodle soup contained 1,600 milligrams of calcium, four times the amount in milk and 10 times that in most meat dishes.

This report was later used by the company in its advertising, though Luo said he had no foreknowledge of this.

Fan Zhihong, associate professor of China Agricultural University, who took part in the evaluation, said the company exaggerated its products' nutrition value.
