Appeals in science fraud attack

TWO men responsible for exposing academic fraud said they would appeal against the "too lenient" sentence given to a medical professor who hired thugs to attack them, while the convicted professor also pledged to appeal, arguing the case was just domestic dispute.
Fang Zhouzi, known as "science cop" for exposing academic frauds, and Fang Xuanchang, a financial journal editor, said they were surprised yesterday after the defendant Xiao Chuanguo was convicted of "creating disturbance and damaging social order" instead of murder since Xiao showed obvious motive and intention to kill them.
Meanwhile, Xiao said he just took the advice from his relative Dai Jianxiang to "teach Fang a lesson" and never expected the result to be as serious as it turned out, reported China News service today.
Xiao said he finally resorted to violence because Fang repeatedly slandered his academic achievements and tarnished the reputation of his wife and mentors when his legal efforts failed.
The Shijingshan People's Court in Beijing did not make comment after handing down the verdict on Sunday.
