Apple store clash settled in compensation

A foreign manager of an Apple store in Beijing has agreed to pay 20,000 yuan (US$3,080) in compensation to a customer he attacked two days ago and local police considered his misconduct not serious enough to warrant detention.

The foreigner, whose name was not disclosed, scuffled with a Chinese customer outside the store in the city's Sanlitun area on May 7, the second day after the release of iPad 2 on the Chinese mainland, Beijing Morning Post reported today.

Chaos erupted on Saturday when some customers cut in line. Witnesses said some scalpers hired students to buy iPad 2 as the Apple store restricted each customer to buy no more than two pieces. During the chaos, the foreign manager and a customer came to blows.

The two reached the compensation deal in the police station. The foreign manager was not detained because the man's injury was slight. The case was a typical civil dispute, police said.

Police said they couldn't determine if the man was a scalper.

Angry customers, demanding an explanation from the foreign manager, swarmed toward the store and crashed its glass doors after the fight.
