Armed drug addict shot dead after 12-hour standoff

AN armed drug addict who allegedly held a woman hostage at gunpoint on a highway in southwest China's Sichuan Province was shot dead this morning after a 12-hour standoff with local police, China National Radio reported.

The suspect Zhang Fuming, 47, was shot dead by a police sniper at around 9am. The hostage was freed uninjured, but one passerby was wounded by the drug addict, police said.

Police said his drug habit kicked in when Zhang was driving on the section near Tiangongyuan Exit on Guangyuan-Nanchong Highway yesterday. He went off the car, shooting at passing vehicles and passersby. He then continued to drive his car to Cangxi Section where he was again under the grip of drug.

Zhang started shooting at passing vehicles and pedestrians again. He also put a woman in his car under hostage.

Police received a report at 9:28pm yesterday after three people saw the woman calling for help. One of three got shot in the stomach when they calling to police. Zhang also fired at a policeman during the standoff.

Police said they seized two guns, two clips, a bullet and four shell casings at the scene. The case is still under investigation.
