Armed patrols to ensure safety
PARAMILITARY troops began round-the-clock patrols in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region yesterday following a series of bloody terrorist attacks over the past few days.
The order for the patrols by the People's Armed Police to guarantee the safety of local people was issued by the Communist Party's top law enforcement official Meng Jianzhu at an emergency meeting on Saturday night in Xinjiang's regional capital Urumqi.
The action came ahead of the July 5 anniversary of a 2009 deadly riot in the city that left nearly 200 people dead.
Troops must patrol in all weather conditions, "raise their visibility, maintain a deterrent threat and strengthen the public's sense of security," said Meng, secretary of the Party's Commission for Political and Legal Affairs.
Meng asked armed police in Xinjiang to take precautionary and preemptive measures to strike hard on violent terrorist crimes so as to ensure a peaceful and happy life for people of all ethnic groups in the region.
He said Xinjiang currently boasts a generally good situation regarding economic and social development. However, the "three forces" of terrorism, extremism and separatism in and outside the country have never given up their attempt to stir up chaos in Xinjiang and tried all means to carry out sabotage activities, he said.
The recent violent terror attacks brought severe harm to life and property of local people and social stability in Xinjiang, Meng said, calling on the armed police forces to strike hard at criminal activitities.
