Arrest in attack on 'science cop'
POLICE in the central Hunan Province have caught the last of the four suspects who were allegedly hired by a medical school professor to beat two science-fraud debunkers in a revenge attack.
Kang Yongjun, 42, was arrested at his home in Xiangtan County last Friday, reported Xiaoxiang Morning Herald yesterday.
Three other alleged hitmen, Dai Jianxiang, Long Guangxing and Xu Lichun, were arrested in Xiangtan and Zhuzhou counties earlier this month.
The quartet were allegedly paid 100,000 yuan (US$14,944) by Xiao Chuanguo, who had a grudge with "science cop" Fang Zhouzi and his ally Fang Xuanchang, to attack them with steel bars and hammers in June and August.
Xiao, 54, who is being investigated by Beijing police, said in a video made in prison that he felt "regretful" for the assault, adding that he did not mean to kill the pair but was "venting his anger." Xiao said he planned to "teach them a lesson" and publicize the whole thing online.
Fang Zhouzi said Xiao was "lying" and had intended to kill him.
Xiao, who has been suspended as a professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology's school of medicine, blamed the two Fangs for the exposure of his alleged academic frauds, costing him a chance to gain membership to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2005.
