Arrest in old candy case

POLICE investigating outdated White Rabbit Creamy Candy in Chongqing Municipality have seized a head of an art troupe for allegedly selling candies that were years past their expiry date.

An anonymous source tipped off Zhongxian County Industry and Commerce Office about trucks filled with candies going in and out of the building of the county's art troupe.

A team of undercover investigators launched a raid but found nothing. The source said the head of the troupe, Zhang Haibing, had been sneaking out boxes of candies every night.

The investigators found a food store selling the outdated candy at extraordinarily low price. The store owner confessed that Zhang had sold him the sweets.

Zhang admitted he sold three truckloads of outdated candies because the art troupe was not making any money.

White Rabbit Creamy Candy is an iconic Chinese brand manufactured by Shanghai Guan Sheng Yuan Group. It suspended production after the national tainted milk scandal but resumed production in October 2008.
