Arrest over 8 killings
POLICE in northeastern China's Jilin Province have detained a man who allegedly killed and dismembered one man and seven women.
Zhang Shuhong, 51, a self-proclaimed fortune teller, is alleged to have robbed his victims to provide for his ex-wife, as he believed he would die at the age of 53.
He allegedly took cash and jewelry worth 30,000 yuan (US$466) from the victims before slaying them in July and August.
Zhang believed he would die in 2012 and wanted to leave money for his ex-wife, Li Yanqiu, China News Service reported on Saturday.
He is alleged to have found the victims, mostly middle-aged unemployed, at a job market in Changyi County. Having offered them work as housekeepers, Zhang is said to have given them water laced with sleeping pills at his apartment. Once asleep, they were strangled and their bodies dismembered and thrown into a river.
Zhang was arrested at his father-in-law's home on August 19.
