Arson death in bus row

AN arsonist who died after starting a bus fire yesterday morning in Hubei Province was seeking revenge over a business deal gone bad.

The arsonist, said to be 48-year-old Jiang Chengwei, set fire to the bus around 9am at a bus station in Jingzhou City and died in the blaze, Xinhua news agency reported.

Investigators said he was the brother of a shareholder in the bus company who was involved in a stock equity dispute with another shareholder, Shang Chunmei, 39.

To take revenge on Shang, Jiang set fire to the bus where she was working as the conductor, police said.

Police said passengers on board at the time managed to flee after the fire broke out.

Shang reportedly emerged from the flames with her clothing on fire and run to a nearby restaurant where the flames were doused with water.

She was taken to hospital afterward. It was reported that she suffered 50 percent burns to her face.

Witnesses told local Jianghan Business News that Jiang got on the bus with a bottle of flammable liquid and quarreled with the driver and conductor before igniting the liquid.

According to the newspaper, the driver managed to escape from the vehicle when the fire started.

The shareholder brother of Jiang has since been detained by police, said Xinhua.
