Artist plans to sail around world

AN artist-sailor will set out on a non-powered circumnavigation of the world next year with three boats and 60 peers, the first of its sort in China.

Zhai Mo, 42, a native of Shandong Province, announced the plan yesterday in Beijing, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

He will start sailing next August in 60-feet boats, visiting five continents and the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in the 33,467-nautical-mile journey.

It will take 340 days, 185 at sea and 155 on land, with visits at 33 points to 27 countries and regions, as well as China's Antarctic Great Wall Station, Zhai told the newspaper.

The squad will return to China in July 2012.

To recruit sailors, Zhai said a global selection will be launched in November. Those passing the first round will have six months' training and 60 finalists will be picked.

Zhai is the first Chinese sailor to attempt a solo, non-powered circumnavigation of the world. He completed his maiden sail last August after two years at sea.

Zhai started his voyage from Shandong's Rizhao city with a boat 3.85 meters across, crossing the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific oceans and visiting more than 40 countries.

Dreaming of adventure, Zhai began planning his global journey in 2003 after learning of the sport from a Norwegian sailor in 2000 during his painting exhibition in New Zealand, he told Shanghai Morning Post.
