Artists aim for biggest creation at snow expo
Chinese artists plan to create a 300-meter-long snow sculpture for the International Snow Sculpture Art Expo in northeast China鈥檚 Heilongjiang Province next month.
The sculpture will consist of three parts. The main portion will depict a girl opening her arms. The arm span will be 40 meters, and the sculpture will be 35 meters tall. If completed, it will be the biggest snow sculpture ever created at the expo.
鈥淚t will be the longest snow sculpture in the expo鈥檚 history,鈥 said snow sculpture artist Zhang Ningge. 鈥淏ringing the three parts together as a whole will be difficult.鈥
China will host the 2022 Winter Olympics, and the theme of the sculpture would reflect that, said Zhang.
鈥淯nder the radiance of the five rings, the girl opens her arms, and her 鈥榳ings鈥 represent the people鈥檚 dreams,鈥 he said.
The expo has been held annually in Harbin, Heilongjiang鈥檚 capital, since 1989. Each year, top artists from around the world take part in snow sculpture competitions held in the city.
For Zhang and his team, the challenge is not just the length of the sculpture, but the details as well. Their design includes pine trees and snow mountains carved in the sculpture, and a slide is also planned for the top.
鈥淚t will definitely shock people鈥檚 minds,鈥 Zhang said.
