Artworks bribery official gets life

A FORMER top official in northwest China, who covered up bribes he received as payment for his mistress's artworks, was sentenced to life in prison yesterday for taking illegal amounts totalling 7.68 million yuan (US$1.17 million).

Li Tangtang, 56, former vice chairman of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, was handed the verdict by the No. 5 Intermediate People's Court of Chongqing Municipality.

Li abused his power to help 14 enterprises and individuals win land and construction project contracts or find jobs while he served as a high-ranking official in northwest Shaanxi Province from 1998 to 2009, the court said.

Payments were made by real estate developers, auto companies and individuals. Some cash was retrieved.

Li was known for his special way of accepting bribes during his tenure.

His mistress, Chen Jianmei, 41, a collector of artworks, helped Li pass off the bribes as payments for paintings which she sold to businessmen and officials at prices much higher than their true value.

Li received a lighter sentence because he confessed and returned some cash.
