Assistance for ferry passengers
THE Maritime Administration of Macau vowed to coordinate ferry operators to offer help to residents and visitors affected by the bankruptcy filing by Macao Dragon, which ceased operations yesterday.
Macao Dragon, one of the four ferry operators providing services between Hong Kong and Macau, announced on Wednesday night that it was no longer able to run its service due to a cap on passenger numbers imposed by the Macau government. This reduced the ferry company's passenger capacity from 1,152 to 750 on each sailing from Hong Kong to Macau, and 600 from Macau to Hong Kong.
According to a statement released by the company, it was ceasing operations yesterday and had called in provisional liquidator Deloitte from Hong Kong.
Susana Wong, Director Maritime Administration, said yesterday morning that local authorities had not been officially informed by the company of its bankruptcy.
Other ferry operators were called on to help stranded travelers at Macau's ferry terminal, according to the Maritime Administration.
Local authorities could revoke Macao Dragon's operating license and expropriate its deposit of two million patacas (US$250,000) if it is confirmed to have ceased operations.
