Astronomical price for a car plate

A Guangzhou car plate was auctioned for a record 1.314 million yuan (US$197,540), making it China's most expensive license plate, Nanfang Metropolis News reported today.

The plate "A8888Q" was brought by a buyer in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, on Tuesday, breaking the previous record of 747,000 yuan set in October 2007.

A total of 100 plates with auspicious numbers were auctioned. Eight of them had a starting price of 10,000 yuan; the rest started from 5,000 yuan.

A8888Q, the most coveted because "8" pronounces as the Chinese word for "fortune" was bitterly pursued by two last bidders, who drove the price to 1.314 million yuan, even higher than the price of the buyer's luxury car.

A6666Q and A3333P were the second and third most expensive car plates, fetching 751,000 yuan and 680,000 yuan respectively.

The total volume of sales almost topped 10 million yuan, a biggest sum ever achieved by a Guangzhou car plate auction.

Analysts attribute the unexpected bidder enthusiasm to the long wait since the last auction was held four months ago.
