At least 20 missing in rain-triggered landslides in Shaanxi
AT least 20 people are missing after landslides struck a mountainous county of northwest China's Shaanxi Province last night, local authorities said today.
Landslides and mud-rock flows struck several villages in Langao County at 10:30 pm yesterday after days of continuous rain, the county's flood control office said in a press release.
In Muzhu village of Siji Township alone, nine homes were flattened and 20 people were missing, it said.
Rescuers were still searching for the victims Monday.
Langao, with a population of 170,000, is at least 400 km from the provincial capital Xi'an and borders Chongqing Municipality.
Continuous rain has battered many Chinese provinces and regions over the past week. The country is also preparing for the worst Yangtze flood in a decade as the water levels in the upper and middle sections of China's longest waterway keep rising.
