At least 70 workers injured, 3 critically, after unidentified armed attackers ransacked Lanzhou construction site

NEARLY 300 unidentified armed people in "police uniforms" and about 100 others in plainclothes launched a brutal attack at a construction site in Lanzhou, capital of west China's Gansu Province, early Monday morning, which left at least 70 construction workers injured including 3 in critical condition, the www.jcrb.com, a news website operated by Procuratorial daily, reported today.

Lanzhou police have launched a probe into the incident.

The attackers broke into the construction site about 5am Monday, according to a witness and a worker at the site, surnamed Liao.

They arrived in at least seven buses with some wearing clothes and helmets that look like police equipments, witnesses reportedly said. Some also carried walkie-talkies.

"They ran in, ransacked the place and damaged everything with iron bars. Some workers were still in sleep in their temporary dorms. Those who tried to fight back were beaten up heavily," Liao recalled.

Some workers said the attackers also robbed them of personal belongings and money.

The workers were building a commercial mall project. The property damage is still being valued.
