Attack called payback
A VETERAN pseudoscience debunker Fang Zhouzi, who was attacked by two thugs on Sunday, said the assault was a payback for his previous exposes.
Fang said in a press conference on Monday that it was not a random attack. The cruel thugs clearly wanted to kill him as they first sprayed ether at his face and then tried to hammer his head, he said as quoted by Beijing Times.
Fang narrowly escaped the attackers but the thugs still hurt his back, he said in his blog yesterday.
Fang said he suspects the attack was tied to a bogus herbal medicine he exposed in 2004.
Fang claimed that an editor, Fang Xuanchang with Caijing magazine, was also attacked on June 24 this year and the two attacks were related. Fang Xuanchang worked with Fang Zhouzi in 2004 to expose the fake "cancer-preventative" medicine.
But his lawyer, Peng Jian, said the major suspect is the recently exposed Taoist priest, Li Yi, who was hailed as a supreme master but was actually a fraud. Another suspect is a prominent professor, Xiao Chuanguo, whom Fang accused of lying about his credentials in 2005. As a "science cop," Fang had many enemies, said Peng.
