Attack on lawyer's car
BEIJING police are investigating an attempted attack by more than 10 unidentified men on a lawyer who represents the family of a college student killed by a hit-and-run driver in the now infamous "Li Gang" case.
The lawyer, Zhang Kai, said he was driving a friend home when they were blocked by an SUV and two sedans loaded with more than 10 young men. It happened on a street with few pedestrians in the capital's Haidian District at 10:40pm on Tuesday, reported The Beijng News yesterday.
Zhang said he quickly locked the car doors before the gang were able to pull them open.
The attackers then kicked and punched his car and shouted "get out."
One of them returned to the SUV and took out a metal rod to smash the windows. Zhang stepped on the gas and fled unhurt, the newspaper said.
Zhang said he made several turns to get rid of the pursing attackers.
Beijing police said they will track the offenders by identifying footprints and fingerprints on Zhang's car.
Zhang said he can't confirm whether the assault is connected with the case in his charge, in which he represents the family of Chen Xiao-feng, who was killed in October by the son of Li Gang, the former deputy police chief of Beishi District of Baoding, Hebei Province.
The driver's claim: "Sue me if you dare. My father is Li Gang!" sparked a public outcry. He was arrested on October 24.
