Attacks lead to city crackdown on large dogs

POLICE in Nanjing have launched a crackdown to seize large dogs after several dog attacks in the Jiangsu Province capital, Yangtze Evening News reported today.

Police are also cracking down on dogs in the city that are without collars and leads. At least 30 breeds of dog, including Tibetan mastiffs, German shepherds, Bernese mountain dogs and dobermanns, are banned from being bred by residents in major areas of Nanjing. All the banned dogs are more than 61 centimeters tall.

Companies that need to use large dogs as guard animals must register with police stations, and residents in the outer suburbs can breed large dogs indoors after registering with police, the report said.

Dog owners must apply for annual certificates for their dogs. Two Tibetan mastiffs attacked two women in a residential complex on August 8. Police confiscated the dogs and fined the owner 2,000 yuan (US$290).
