Aussie cops nab Chinese students in drug case

Nine Chinese, some of them students, were arrested by Australian police for involvement in a drug ring which imported Chinese cold medicine to extract drug, China Radio International reported yesterday.

Police in Melbourne found several kilograms of pseudoephedrine, a compound found in cold medicine, and around 300 grams of methamphetamine, a drug also known as "ice," in a raid on July 3.

The drug ring based in Melbourne bought large amounts of ContacNT, a common OTC cold medicine, in China and delivered them to Melbourne. They paid some Chinese students there to pick up the packages, the report said.

The medicine was mailed to Melbourne along with other food and daily necessities. Many Chinese students were paid to receive the packages without knowing they were harmful.

Four kilograms of pseudoephedrine, enough to make 2.8kg of "ice," can be extracted from every 10kg of ContacNT. Each kilogram of pseudoephedrine is priced at A$100,000 (US$102,800) in the black market.
