Australia tops desired destinations of Chinese tourists
AUSTRALIA, France and New Zealand are the top three overseas destinations that Chinese tourists want to visit in the coming year, a survey covering more than 3,000 Chinese respondents revealed today.
About 39 percent of respondents said Australia is their dream destination in the coming year, according to the 2013 survey released by Hotels.com, a leading hotel booking website.
The survey called "Chinese International Travel Monitor" interviewed more than 3,000 Chinese travelers on the mainland who traveled at least once to overseas countries or Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan in the past five years and more than 1,500 hoteliers around the world.
In a growing trend, 62 percent of Chinese interviewees said they prefer to travel independently and not as part of a group, said Johan Svanstrom, managing director of Hotels.com Asia Pacific.
This development has been confirmed by the hoteliers surveyed, who said 70 percent of Chinese travelers they received now travel independently, compared with a much more even split in 2012.
The majority of Chinese travelers spend one or two weeks on outbound trips, and sightseeing, enjoying food and shopping are the top three events that they favored, according to the survey. Tourists below 35 years old prefer delicacies, opera and concerts more.
Senior tourists prefer luxury accommodations more, and 40 percent said they have high requirements of hotels overall, according to the survey.
The ability to accept Chinese payment methods is seen as the single most important offering from hotels as more than 25 percent of travelers said it was a key area for improvement. They also asked hoteliers to improve the provision of translated items like websites and some said they would like more Mandarin-speaking staff workers in hotels.
