Authorities find industrial salt in soy sauce

Authorities in Foshan, southern Guangdong Province are investigating allegations that a local condiment producer used industrial salt to make soy sauce.
The Weiji Food Seasonings Co Ltd produced 90 boxes of mushroom soy sauce using illegal industrial salt with 65 boxes already in the market, said officials who confiscated 26 tons of industrial salt found in its factory.
But the officials acknowledged that the seized products had been tested to meet the quality standards. "Perhaps the industrial salt is not a major ingredient, that's why the soy sauce still measured up the standards. But the company's practice is unquestionably illegal," one official said.
The Foshan Industrial and Commercial Administration denied an earlier accusation that the company used 760 tons of industrial salt solution to produce thousands of boxes of soy sauce.
Foshan Haday Flavoring & Food Co Ltd, a leading seasonings manufacturer in China, made an announcement today that it has no relationship with Weiji.
"We never commissioned Weiji to produce any products. All the salt we use in our products is edible and refined," Haday said. But some people still suspect that Weiji is operated by Haday because one of Haday's brands is called Weiji.
