Authorities give safety top priority

SAFETY during the Spring Festival rush has been given top priority.

Liu Tienan, vice chief of the National Development and Reform Commission, said there would be greater efforts to avoid disasters such as that in 2008, when heavy snow and freezing rain brought traffic to a standstill in the south.

Hu Yadong, vice minister of railways, said checks and maintenance had been stepped up, and there were plans in place to cope with accidents and extreme weather conditions.

He Jianzhong, a Ministry of Transport spokesman, told a press conference yesterday that transport safety checks had already been carried out in 20 provincial-level regions.

Wang Dexue, vice chief of the State Administration of Work Safety, said both professional and amateur rescue teams were in place. And Xia Xinghua, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Administration, said there were contingency plans to ensure smooth and safe flights.
