Authorities lash out at pyramid scheme rings
THE Ministry of Public Security and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce launched a crackdown on pyramid scheme in southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, detaining 768 suspects and sending home about 1,900 people lured into the scam, Beijing News reported today.
After the pyramid scheme in Laibin, a city in Guangxi, was reported by the media, the Ministry of Public Security immediately ordered Guangxi police to deal with it unrelentingly. Liu Lujun, director of economic crime investigation of the ministry, said pyramid scheme would be a key target for Guangxi police this year.
Police intervention has forced many pyramid scheme participants to leave Guangxi. The ministry asked police departments across the country to take measures to prevent these participants from gathering elsewhere.
The scam was first reported by CCTV on August 11. Guangxi police have questioned more than 100 suspects involved in the pyramid scheme and arrested a key organizer in Hebei Province.
