Authorities probe milk safety concerns
FOOD safety watchdog in Wuhan City, central China Hubei Province, were testing samples of the baby formula blamed by parents for causing the development of breasts in babies as young as one-year-old, the Ministry of Health spokesman Deng Haihua said today.
Local food safety authorities had earlier refused a parent's request to investigate the milk powder made by Qingdao-base Synutra company, saying that they do not accept testing requests from individuals, Oriental Morning Post reported.
While the results of the investigation are pending, Deng said early development of breasts can occur with some young children. He said two out of every 1,000 female infants would show symptom of developing breasts.
He added that even experts may not be able to determine the cause of precocious puberty as there are many factors that could lead to the symptom.
