Authorities swoop on baby ring

Pregnant women and new mothers were among suspects arrested in a police swoop on a cross-provincial baby-trafficking network, officials said.

Members of the network, based in poverty-stricken Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province, allegedly sold a baby girl for 30,000 yuan (US$4,560) and a baby boy for up to 60,000 yuan, the provincial news portal (www.scol.com.cn) reported.

The alleged ringleaders, a couple from Liangshan, took babies and pregnant women to Linyi City, Shandong Province, to find buyers, it reported.

Police launched raids in two regions last week, rescuing 15 babies and arresting 78 suspects, 36 of them Liangshan natives, it reported.

Police became suspicious in September 2015 when they noticed that the couple commuted between Liangshan and Linyi with unusual frequency. Officers followed them and uncovered their network.

“The husband lived in a farmhouse in suburban Linyi,” police official Luo Yanjia said. “Around 120 police were dispatched in the crackdown. Luckily, armed conflicts didn’t happen.

“After we broke into the house, we found three male suspects sleeping in three rooms.

“Around seven to eight women, each taking care of an infant, were packed in two 10-square-meter rooms and they slept on the ground,” Luo said.

The rescued babies have been sent to Liangshan civil affairs authorities, the news portal reported.
