Authorities swoop on fake tofu mill

AUTHORITIES have shut down a bean curd mill in Wuhan City of Hubei Province for making bogus tofu without using a single soy bean.

The Industrial and Commercial Bureau of Dongxihu District, said workers in the bean curd mill mixed large amounts of synthetic materials, such as soy protein isolates, coloring, soy oil and modified starch to make fake tofu, Changjiang Times reported yesterday.

Police seized 47 bags of soy protein isolates, 16 barrels of soy oil and seven barrels of coloring agents used to whiten food at the mill.

The coagulated curd was packaged in a way that made it look exactly the same as a well-known tofu brand, Qianye. It has been sold to markets in Hunan, Hubei and Sichuan provinces since May, the report said.

The fake bean curd was selling well, leading to a sharp drop in sales at Suzhou-based De'anfa Food Co, which makes Qianye tofu.

Yang Shuaifeng, a De'anfa investigator, said the bogus tofu even had the same anti-counterfeit laser hologram.
