Authority rebuts rumors that several died in road mayhem
THE government of Yiyang City in central China's Hunan Province clarified yesterday that no death was reported in a vicious road accident in which a car drove into pedestrians, refuting online rumors that several people had died.
The accident injured 14 people, including the driver. Nine were receiving treatment in Yiyang No. 3 Hospital while the rest in Yiyang Central Hospital. A 63-year-old man with brain injury was still in critical condition, Guangzhou Daily reported today.
Liu Jianlin, the 45-year-old driver, has been detained for endangering public security, a government spokesman said at a press conference yesterday.
Liu, a native from Changsha, the provincial capital, owns a holiday resort in the suburbs of Yiyang.
The spokesman gave no clue why Liu brandished a knife at pedestrians after he got off the car. His alcohol test result is not available yet.
Rumors swirling on microblogging sites said several people had died in the accident.
