Authority seeking to show a softer side
AN urban management authority in southwest China is seeking young women to work as officers in what it says is an attempt to change its violent image.
Xindu District in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, is hiring eight female officers aged from 18 to 23. The requirements state candidates should be taller than 1.6 meters and be of good appearance.
Once officers reach the age of 26, the contract will be terminated, Sichuan Province's news portal reported yesterday.
But critics of the scheme have questioned why a presentable appearance is specifically emphasized in the recruitment notice.
They suspect it is a ruse to deflect attention from violent clashes between officers and street vendors and cover up their notorious image, according to newssc.org.
The women will join a female team patrolling major business streets and promenades, adding a "tender and soft touch" to the infamous image of urban management officers frequently being involved in conflicts when carrying out their duties, an official with the Xindu urban management office said.
The official said the female team was established seven years ago.
In standard uniforms, middle-heel shoes and with some light make-up, they used peaceful and rational persuasion in a civilized manner when performing duty, avoiding verbal abuse and physical clashes.
"We don't just pay attention to their appearance. Communication skills, team work spirit and many other qualities are also considered when selecting officers," the official told the news site.
