Average Shanghai commute is 47 minutes

COMMUTERS take an average of 47 minutes to get to work in Shanghai - the third-worst in 50 Chinese cities - according to a survey by China's Academy of Science.

The worst commuting city is Beijing where on average people spend 52 minutes on their way to work. It takes Guangzhou residents 48 minutes and Shenzhen residents 46 minutes in daily commuting. Five cities, including Tianjin, have an average journey of more than 40 minutes.

The 2010 China New Urbanization Report was generated after a one-year survey calculating population distribution, commute distance, and public transport to get the results.

The report also quoted a survey on commuting times in 13 countries conducted by UK based Regus consultancy, which said Chinese commuters take an average of 42 minutes to get to work.

That's 19 minutes slower than the United States and 20 minutes slower than Canada. The report quoted an analyst saying the longer commute time for workers in China is due to the denser population in big cities.

But the report has sparked suspicion that the calculation was inaccurate. Guangzhou residents said the commuting time must have been exaggerated in their city, which is much smaller and has fewer cars than Beijing and Shanghai, according to Southern Metropolis Daily today.

Yet many others, mostly car owners, blamed the tough commuting conditions on the city's whimsical road construction projects, the newspaper reported.

However, the 47-minute average commuting time in Shanghai was considered to be underestimated, according to Shanghai Evening News. One commuter told the newspaper he spent 100 minutes each day on his trip to work.
