Avid fans eagerly anticipating Harry Potter finale in China

Thousands of Harry Potter fans entered cinemas around the country in the wee hours of this morning to see the final episode of the long-running Harry Potter series.

Parting is such sweet sorrow, and the time has nearly arrived for China's legion of Harry Potter fans to bid farewell to Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, and the rest of Hogwarts and its wands, broom sticks and spellbooks.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2", the eighth of the wizard world series, was released today on the Chinese mainland, three weeks after its premiere in North America.

Since the introduction of the novels to China, Harry Potter has accompanied almost a generation of young Chinese.

Some industry observers predict "Part 2" will break the first-day box office record set by the Hollywood blockbuster, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

However, Shanghai cinemas told Shanghai Daily that the film didn't break a record number of viewers on its first day as they had expected.

At the Shanghai Film Art Center, audiences filled only 300 of the 1,000 seats in its largest theater for the midnight premiere.

Zhang Bin, marketing manager of the cinema, attributed the film's "tepid reception" to the dwindling interest of Harry Potter fans had read all the books and watched the previous seven films.

By comparison, "Transformers" appeals to a broader audience, Zhang said.

At the Studio City Shanghai, about 200 tickets were sold for the premiere show, only half of the number for the "Transformer" premiere, the cinema said.

Though the box-office might not be promising for cinema chains, the finale of the magic series still wooed many royal fans across country.

Cun Yang, who will get a master's degree from Renmin University next year, wrote on her microblog that she felt like she had grown up with Harry.

"Although people in real life don't have magical powers or a destiny to fight the evil, they still have to grow up and learn to bear more responsibility, just like Harry," she said.

On China's most popular microblog website, weibo.com, the Harry Potter finale topic has more than 2 million entries, and a user named "Linggirl" captured the passion that multitudes share as she wrote, "The years with Harry Potter were the most fantastic in my life."

The online Harry Potter fan club (hpfansclub.uueasy.com) has constructed its own Hogwarts community with 3,000 members. It even features its own version of the Harry Potter-realm newspaper The Daily Prophet. The clubs' "students" are planning to see the film dressed in cloaks or Hogwarts school uniforms armed with magic wands.
