Baby boy saved after being buried alive
A BABY boy born with a cleft lip has been rescued after being buried alive in a shallow grave, allegedly by his relatives.
The infant was discovered by a woman who heard crying coming from underground while she was collecting herbs in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, local news website Guangxi Online News reported yesterday.
The woman went to get help and soon after police dug into the dirt and found the child lying in a small cardboard box, which had been buried loosely enough for the air to reach it.
The baby was taken to a hospital in Tiandong County, where he was vomiting mud and is said to be in a serious condition.
Several media reports claimed the boy had spent eight days underground after being exposed for two days, though those details have yet to be corroborated.
Police have arrested five people, including three of the baby’s relatives, on suspicion of attempted murder, China Central Television said.
Two of the relatives are the child’s grandmothers, a local government official surnamed Zheng was quoted as saying.
He told CCTV that the boy had been abandoned for about three or four days, but couldn’t confirm how long he had been buried.
