Baby died as 'unlucky' day birth was delayed

HEALTH authorities in a south China city are investigating allegations that a doctor delayed surgery to deliver a baby as the date was considered inauspicious, causing the baby to die three days after it was born.

The family claim doctor Zeng Yuanna at the People's Hospital in Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province refused to operate on August 13 as that date was the Ghost Festival in the Chinese lunar calendar.

This was even though the woman had requested a cesarean section.

But the hospital said the family insisted on postponing surgery by one day, fearing the inauspicious day was unlucky for the baby.

Li Xiaoqin, aged 32, showed signs of labor on August 12.

On the evening of August 13, Li requested a cesarean. Doctor Zeng asked her to delay surgery as operating on the Ghost Festival brings bad luck, claim the family.

When nurses prepared Li for surgery at 6am on August 14, they couldn't hear the baby's heartbeat.

The baby was born in a critical condition and died three days later.

The family is demanding 2 million yuan (US$313,000) compensation.

The Ghost Festival is held on the 15th night of the seventh lunar month in much of China, though on the 14th night in southern China.
