Baby dies after mom's 2hr wait
A WOMAN in labor lost her baby after being left anesthetized in an operating theater for more than two hours in a large public hospital in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province.
The tragedy occurred on October 4, during the National Day holiday, at the No.2 Hospital Affiliated to the Zhengzhou University.
The husband, surnamed Tian, told China News Service yesterday: "We trusted the hospital and the doctors. We followed all their instructions. Some hospital staff were on holiday but should there not be doctors on holiday shift? Where were they? There were simply no doctors at all in the operating room. The hospital is to blame for the death of our baby."
The public hospital, built in 1952, is reputed to be one of the best in Zhengzhou for obstetrics and gynaecology. Tian said they chose it for the birth of their first child because they thought it was more reliable.
He said a pre-natal check by hospital doctors showed the fetus was healthy, but as his wife was suffering hypertension caused by the pregnancy, doctors advised a cesarean section to reduce risk.
Tian said his wife was anesthetized and then moved to the operating room at 9:30am.
He said he saw nurses make calls several times and was sure they were trying to summon a doctor. They even borrowed his phone after theirs ran low on power.
Tian was told by nurses about 11am "they had lost the fetal heartbeat." And at 11:30am, they told him the baby had died in the womb.
"Had the hospital told us earlier they did not have a doctor to conduct this surgery, I would have transferred my wife, and our child would not have been killed this way," Tian said.
He said no doctor attended his wife until past 2pm after she was transferred to one of the wards.
He said his wife, who used to be an outgoing person who laughed a lot, was "almost another person" after the tragedy, and now rarely talked.
The hospital director, surnamed Hao, said they would take "due responsibility" for the baby's death.
Hospital officials told China News Service: "An investigation into the incident is under way."
Doctors told Shanghai Daily that as long as both mother and fetus were healthy, the baby would be unaffected if the mother was anesthetized.
According to the World Health Organization, most drugs cross the placenta quickly and there should be caution when anesthetizing an expectant mother for delivery.
